GERD, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a very common and disturbing condition. It can simply be understood as a disorder where stomach contents irritate the esophagus. Generally, once the food reaches the stomach, the acid does not return to the esophagus.

When this happens, it causes irritation known as jealousy, which is very inconvenient. Many people suffer from this condition, and mostly after consuming a certain type of food. Chronic heartburn - Episodes of frequent heartburn are one of the most frequent GERD symptoms. Heartburn is an uncomfortable, burning sensation that reflux sufferers experience in their chest area. Heartburn normally occurs immediately after a meal, after lying down or when the person is leaning forward. There are some over-the-counter medicines that can be used to reduce the effects of heartburn such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors.

Sour / bitter taste in the mouth - Another common sign of GERD symptoms is a sour or bitter taste in the mouth of a patient suffering from reflux. This usually results in backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, and will often be accompanied by heartburn. The disease is usually diagnosed by the patients that they experience these sour or bitter flavors more than twice a week.

Chest pain - When a patient is experiencing pain in their chest cavity, it can also be one of the symptoms of GERD. Such pains can take the form of heavy dull sensations that spread to the chest, and can sometimes be accompanied by heartburn. These pains can be so strong that they can easily be confused with the pain during a heart attack.

Difficulty swallowing - Sometimes when a person experiences difficulties while swallowing, it can be taken as a possible acid reflux symptom. However, difficulty swallowing is a problem that is commonly experienced by patients with advanced symptoms of the disease.

Water brash - Water brash is a condition in which a person is more prone to saliva. In some cases, the condition may be one of the GERD symptoms.
